Transaven Airlines Accident off Los Roques Islands, Venezuela

On January 4, 2008, a Venezuelan airplane carrying 14 passengers and crew onboard, including 8 Italian tourists, four Venezuelans and another of unconfirmed nationality, took off from the Simon Bolivar International Airport near Caracas. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reportedly radioed that both engines of the twin-engine plane had failed. The plane crashed into the sea about 24 miles (39 kilometers) off the coast of Los Roques islands. According to press reports, authorities are using helicopters and boats to search for survivors.
The Let 41OUVP-E3, registered as YV2081, twin-engine propeller plane was operated by Transaven Airlines, a small regional airline that frequently flies to Los Roques. The plane was equipped with two Walter M-601E engines.
