TANS Peru Boeing 737 Airplane Crash

Summary of Accident
On August 23, 2005, a Boeing 737-200 with 100 people on board, including 92 passengers, operated by TANS (Transportes Aeros Nacionales de la Selva) crashed in Northern Peru. At least 41 persons died in the accident.
The TANS Flight 204 came down 1.8 miles from the airport at Pucallpa, Peru as it tried to land in heavy storms and strong winds. The flight was due to fly onto the Amazon city of Iquitos, a popular tourist destination.
Accident Investigation (As of 1 September 2005)
Authorities believe the plane crash was possibly caused by a sudden change in wind speed or direction, a phenomenon known as wind shear. The plane was reportedly trying to make an emergency landing in stormy weather. The pilot tried to land in a marsh to soften the impact but the landing split the aircraft in two.
The missing flight data recorder was recovered a week later and had apparently not suffered any alteration. The flight data recorder is expected to be key in determining whether wind shear caused by a sudden, violent hail storm was to blame for pushing the plane off course as it made its final descent to land, or whether there was pilot error. The recorder is being sent to the United States for analysis.
