A corporate jet headed for Chicago ran off the end of a runway on Wednesday morning at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, twelve miles from midtown Manhattan. The plane blasted through a fence and across a six-lane highway, hitting two cars, before ramming its nose into a nearby warehouse. One of the wingtips clipped a building and a post-crash fire charred the fuselage. At least 14 people were injured, one critically.
The Challenger CL-600, built by Canadair, was attempting to take off but never made it into the air. The Federal Aviation Administration said nothing appeared to be amiss when the tower cleard the jet for take-off on a 6,000-foot-long runway. Officials said communications from the plane were normal.
The pilot did not declare an emergency but never became airborne. Investigators will be looking into whether the pilot aborted the takeoff too late in the process, whether some mechanical malfunction with flight controls kept the plane on the ground, or whether ice on the wing caused the crash.
Last December, the pilot of a Challenger aborted a takeoff at Teterboro and ran off the other end of the runway, ending up in the mud. No one was injured but the aircraft received minor damage. That incident was blamed on a weight-and-balance problem that kept the plane from lifting off.
